Indeed.
I also find this quote relevant:
"Only in America do physicians who evaluate new drugs need bodyguards."
As in ideologies where beneath the peace, justice and brotherhood rhetoric is a profoundly totalitarian mindset that intends to force you to submit to its will - for your own good, of course (or else), totalitarianism comes in many forms [see link below].
Unfortunately, these type of medical affairs indeed reflect a form of totalitarianism, not level-playing-field capitalism.
I have suspected that it is totalitarians on the left and perhaps the far right who are destroying healthcare, among other institutions.

And in today's WSJ Health Blog we get this bit of news from Merck:
Frazier, 52, has won points among Merck defenders for his tell-it-to-the-judge style. He hasn’t settled any of the roughly 27,000 Vioxx lawsuits filed against the company following the withdrawal of the pain medicine. So far, the company has won 10 cases and lost five.
Frazier’s replacement as general counsel is Bruce Kuhlik, who joined the company in 2005 to help deal with the Vioxx litigation. He previously worked for PhRMA, the drug industry trade group.
Tell me this is not a profit driven business willing to do anything to make a profit.
